There is something about these tiny little humans, these new little souls, these fresh little babes.   I just love them so.  All of them.  Sure I love some especially, but really all of them amaze me.

New little bundles, precious and needy and beautiful and helpless.  Not yet misguided by us, or jaded by the world.  And they don’t have to earn our acceptance or approval, they can’t, don’t know how, don’t care to.

That is maybe my favorite thing about babies.  They really get love.  You give it, they receive it.  Smiles, hugs, cuddles, kisses, whispers and songs.  You give these to a baby and they will thrive.  They are born with a desire for a strong connection.  They want to be fed and held.  They just want love.  Infants don’t have any pretense, they are not born with misconceptions about worthiness (or unworthiness I guess I should say.)  Unfortunately we don’t get to stay that pure forever.

We form our own ideas and thoughts about how love should and shouldn’t be given and received.  Our family and friends, t.v. and books, good and bad relationships all muddy the waters about love.  Intentionally or unintentionally, shame and fear based relationships happen, in parenting and friendships, at home, at work, or at church.  The concept of being motivated to give love by receiving love gets lost and we have to search and fight to find and keep it.   …And now I have gone on a little rant.

I think maybe what I was trying to say is:
This is one of the many, many things I love about babies- They don’t know what unworthy is.  They only know grace.  There is no striving for acceptance; there is no trying to earn love.  They just receive it.  If only we could all get back to that.  If only we could all lay down shame and fear and feelings of unworthiness and put aside loathing and judgment.  How wonderful would that be?  Sweet babies, and this season where we celebrate the Light of the World, the Hope of Glory coming here remind me-  Jesus came, newborn babe, pure and holy, all for Love.

And I can't think of a better reminder.
